Loving Repeating’s Gertrude Stein – As Unique as They Come

November 18th, 2010

We are opening our next season with a West Coast Premiere musical, Loving Repeating . . .  A Musical of Gertude Stein. Gertrude Stein was a brilliant American writer who lived most of her life in France. She was friends or associated with many incredible artists; including writers Thornton Wilder, Ezra Pounds and Ernest Hemmingway, as well as painters Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.

Many scholars believe Gertude Stein tried to invoke the ideas of cubism into her poetry. Much like her famous friends Picasso and Matisse, who were at the forefront of the cubist art movement, she tried to incorporate those same concepts in how she wrote her poetry. Below is a video that shows many of Picasso’s works while Gretude Stein’s voice reads one of her most famous poems. Enjoy!
